October 23 Conference

The UK is a globally recognised hub for animation, celebrated for its innovative and creative content. Our strengths lie in storytelling, character development, and humour. Despite having commercial successes and establishing hugely successful brands, the competition remains fierce. It’s important  that we continue to focus on nurturing growth within the UK animation industry, while celebrating both commercial and creative achievements.

I am thrilled to be part of an esteemed panel at this conference, which is dedicated to discussing and advancing this crucial topic.

In addition to providing expert insights on financing and distribution, I am eager to delve into the details of tax relief—a subject I have  campaigned for to level the playing field with our competitors. Although we haven't reached our goal yet, the recent developments are promising steps forward. As announced in the recent Budget, starting 1 January 2024, the animation TV sector will benefit from a 39% relief (net 29.25% after tax). Previously, animated features could claim the existing Film Tax Relief at a rate of 25%, but now they are encompassed within the Animation AVEC. Facilitated by a compelling case from Animation UK, this change represents a significant net uplift of 4.25% after tax for animated features and other animated content.

Tax relief, however, is only beneficial with the necessary investment to kickstart projects. This aspect of funding is nuanced and complex, and I look forward to contributing to the discussion by exploring funding avenues more broadly. Besides financial support, I hope we can discuss opportunities to showcase and pitch our work to international buyers and co-producers.

This conference is a valuable addition to the industry calendar, offering a platform to engage with experts on all aspects of financing and business within the animation sector.

I am looking forward to  engaging discussions and the exchange of innovative ideas.
